The Pillars of Islam

There are Five Pillars of Islam. They are :

Shahadah (Witness, Creed or Faith)

  • The sincere profession of believing in the One and Only God with all His Attributes and Words, not associating anyone with Him, and believing that Prophet Mohammad Peace Be Upon Him is His true and Final Messenger, and accepting that his ways are the only righteous ways.
  • The statement of testimony for a Muslim is called Shahadah and it is :

“I bear witness that there is no god except Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad (Sull-Allaaho álaehe wa sullum) is His slave and Messenger.”

Salah (Prayer)

  • A Muslim is required to pray five times daily starting from dawn to late evening. These five daily prayers regulate the day of a Muslim. This is the most important form of worship for a Muslim.
  • Prayers involve ablution, standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting postures.
  • Muslims face in the direction of the Holy Ka’ba, in Makkah when they pray.
  • Muslims perform daily prayer in Arabic language as taught by Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him

Zakat (Obligatory Charity)

  • Allah says in The Holy Qur’an: “So establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and obey the Prophet; that you may receive mercy.” (The Holy Qur’an 24:56)
  • It is made obligatory upon Muslims to pay minimum (2.5%) charity on their yearly savings. Extra is encouraged.

Saum (Fasting in Ramadan)

  • Allah says in The Holy Qur’an: “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint.” (The Holy Qur’an 2:183)
  • Ramadan is 9th month in Islamic Lunar calendar
  • Obligatory fasting period is from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days.

Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah)

  • Pilgrimage to Makkah once in life time for able Muslims
  • Millions of Muslims perform Hajj each year from all over the world.
